You can use any gelatin flavor you like, but I prefer the green apple jello with the green grapes and the strawberry jello with the red ones. They go together for the perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors.

And while they’re not as healthy as plain grapes, jello candy grapes are a delicious treat to satisfy your sweet tooth once in a while.

  • Seedless Grapes — We used a mix of seedless grapes or green seedless grapes. You can use your favorite kind of grapes. Remember that grapes should be firm, plump, and firmly attached to the stem. Don’t buy grapes that are mushy, wet, or shriveled at the stems.
  • Jello — We used Strawberry Jell-O and Sonic Green Apple Gelatin. I like how the green apple flavor adds a tart flavor to the green grapes and the strawberry jello makes the red grapes a nice sweet treat. But feel free to use your favorite flavor and experiment with different flavors and grape combinations.

Here’s what you need to get started on your candied grapes:

How to MakeCandied Grapes Without Corn Syrup

This section shows you how to make the recipe with step-by-step photos and instructions. For the full printable recipe, see the recipe card below.

Step 1: Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or wax paper and set it aside. Clear space in your freezer for the cookie sheet.

Step 2: Detach all the grapes from the stems. Rinse with water in a colander. Do not add soap or detergent, as these products get absorbed by the grapes. Add the grapes to a bowl and fill to the top with water. Keep them wet until you get ready to roll them in the jello powder.

Step 3: Pour the jello into a shallow bowl or plate. Use a separate dish for any additional flavors of jello.

Step 4: Roll wet grapes, a few at a time, in the jello powder until they are completely coated in a thin layer of powder. Use a toothpick or a spoon to remove the grapes from the plate. Gentle shake off the excess powder and place the covered grapes in a single layer on the baking sheet. Repeat the process until you run out of jello powder or grapes.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these grapes frozen, right out of the freezer. They’re so refreshing on a hot summer day. If the frozen grapes are too hard to eat, let them rest for about 5-10 minutes before consuming them.

Storage and Freezing

Freezing instructions: Store jello candy grapes in a freezer-safe bag in the freezer. Do not refrigerate or leave out at room temperature. This delicious snack will keep in the freezer for about a week, but they have the best flavor and consistency if eaten within 2-3 days.

Candy Grapes Recipe Tips and Tricks

  • If frozen grapes are too difficult for you to eat, you can either store them in the fridge instead or take them out of the freezer about 5-10 minutes before eating so they won’t be quite as firm. The colors may run a little, though.
  • Having trouble getting the powder to stick? Make sure your grapes are wet enough. That’s why I leave them resting in the water until I’m ready to roll them.
  • It’s important to flash-freeze your grapes before putting them all in a bag together. The flash freeze will keep them from sticking together.
  • Don’t take the easy way out and try to add the powder and grapes to a bag to shake together. Unfortunately, I’ve learned the hard way that it just makes for clumpy powder that won’t stick to the grapes.

Additions and Variations

Use sugar-free Jell-O. Make your candy grapes recipe sugar free by substituting the regular gelatin for a sugar-free variety.

Try a different Jell-O flavor. Cotton candy, blue raspberry, watermelon, lemon, or lime would all be delicious with the red or green seedless grapes.

Roll the grapes in crushed hard candy. I’ve seen candy grapes made with crushed Jolly Rancher candies, rock candy (Pop Rocks), or sour candies. They’re called crack grapes because of the cracked candy coating. You’ll have to dip the grapes in corn syrup or sugar syrup first if you try this version; the candy will not cling to grapes that are just wet.

Make candy grapes with Kool-Aid powder. Mix some Kool Aid powder with sugar, and follow the same steps as above. The lemon-lime and strawberry-kiwi flavors would be amazing with grapes! Fun Dip (just the powder) or Pixie Stix powder could work, too, especially for small batches.

Jello Grapes FAQ

What are candied grapes?

Candy grapes are grapes that have been rolled in jello powder and then frozen. They’re a great treat for summer, and it’s an easy recipe! They are not, however, the same as cotton candy grapes which are a variety of white table grapes that you can find in stores.

Can I use a different flavor of jello?

Yes, you can use any flavor your family likes. The sour flavors complement the sweetness of the grapes really well, but the sweeter gelatin flavors are fine, too.

Besides color, what’s the difference between red and green grapes?

According to Spoon University, red grapes have thicker, firmer skin and are sweet and juicy on the inside. The darker the skin, the more phytonutrients it has. Green grapes, on the other hand, have thinner skin, are sweet with a hint of tartness, and some varieties are more sour than others.

As the grapes thaw, the colors may begin to mix. To avoid this, it’s best to keep the grapes frozen.
